Are Your Self Storage Items Insured?

Posted on 15 Nov 2017 in Storage Tips

Last week, there was a fire at a self storage facility in Surrey.

18 units were affected, either directly by the fire, or indirectly by the efforts of the Firefighters to bring the blaze under control.

We thought it would be prudent to remind all our clients of the importance of having your belongings properly insured while in storage. Please check with your current home insurance provider regarding your coverage, as some policies limit the coverage amount as well as the coverage period for belongings while in storage away from your principal residence.

Unless you have insurance for your belongings while in storage, you are not covered against any loss. When you filled out your rental lease agreement, we explained that you were responsible for insuring the contents of your storage unit.

We have storage insurance available through Intact Insurance that offers coverage for fire and theft. Our Customer Service Coordinators can answer any questions you may have regarding what their coverage offers.

We are not trying to sell you insurance. If you have a current home insurance provider, please find out what coverage they have available for your stored belongings. Ultimately, this is your decision, but we would prefer it if every one of our clients had their belongings insured while in storage.

Sincerely,

Self Storage Depot
